In late 19th-century Russia, a dashing aristocrat, Count Alexei Vronsky, meets a charming young woman, Anna Karenina, the wife of an important dignitary from the capital. The fleeting acquaintance and mutual feelings rapidly grow into a deep passionate love. For both it is the first true connection. It is so strong that Anna decides on a scandal by the standards of aristocratic society - to leave her husband and son to escape from St. Petersburg with Vronsky.
